Willie Lewis Brown, Jr. (1934-    ) was elected to the California Assembly in 1964 and re-elected 16 consecutive times, serving a total of 31 years. In 1980, he was elected Speaker of the Assembly, the longest serving in California history (15 years) and the only African-American. Brown was twice elected Mayor of San Francisco (1996-2003), the only African-American to hold that position.
